Economic Review 2008: The Cosmetic Surgery Industry

Filed under: News — Jeffrey @ 3:55 pm

More and more doctors are reporting that they too are feeling the pinch of our nation’s current economic recession.

Recent polls taken by the ASPS suggest that more consumers are either choosing to undergo less invasive procedures or to postpone more traditional surgical treatments until the economy improves.

The ASPS conducted identical surveys in both March and October of this year in an effort to gauge the current population’s feelings toward cosmetic surgery in hard financial times. Over nine percent of woman said that the current economic situation did in fact have a factor in postponing or influencing their decisions to undergo plastic surgery, and nearly half of all participants said they are less likely to undergo any procedure than when asked six months ago.

This same sentiment is heard from physicians, where over half reported a decrease in patient interest in surgical procedures.

…However, what is interesting in these polls and figures is the persistent increase of interest and treatments performed in the area of non-invasive procedures such as Botox, facial fillers and chemical peels. The largest increase in this area appeared in the northeast region of the United States, but plastic surgeons across the country felt a rising demand altogether with 73% of physicians reporting an increased or stable demand for these aforementioned treatments.

The market is inevitably poised to bounce back, the only question is when. Aggressive advertising campaigns can curtail loses even in hard economic times. Survivors will undoubtedly reap the benefits of a populace refilled with currency when the ebb and flow of the economy enters its next phase.
