How is the Cosmetic Industry Really Faring?

Amidst reports of the cosmetic surgery industry sagging heavily in our current economic condition, it is hard to discern what is the actual state of the industry that just can’t help but keep clear of the media.

Currently, it is expected that the demand for cosmetic surgery products will rise by 8.4 percent over the next four years. This already coming from a $1.9 billion nationwide industry. Clearly, with an aging population, the social acceptance of plastic surgery loosening, and the heightened perception of outward aesthetics, one can make the argument that “hard times” is completely relative for the cosmetic surgery industry.

What we are seeing with this large product increase is a direct correlation to non-invasive procedures and their rapid consumption amongst the American middle and upper class. The injectable sector has seen huge growth within the past ten years and such market expectations only show room for greater increases.

Plastic surgeons need to heavily consider marketing these products using techniques to garner greater visibility in new media outlets. If a surgeon is falling on hard times or blaming the economy for a failing book of business, something other than the economy might be at work… especially with the consistent and rising figures that we’ve been seeing.
